Last week someone rang my mobile using the following number 08080000144, but I missed the call. Today they rang again and claimed they where calling from Vodafone and wanted to check everything was okay…
Scammers: Can I ask a few questions?
Me: Sure
Scammers : Whats your name?
Me: Hang on a minute you should know my name!
Scammers : Hangs up!
It was quite funny because he introduced himself as Jamie!
So anytime your not sure who is ringing you, either Google the phone number
Ask them a question, if they are from Vodafone, 02, Orange etc they will have your details infront of them.
Here is a story of someone falling for the scam…
http://www.3g.co.uk/3GForum/showthread.php?t=53901
The same goes for banks etc, they will never send you an email asking for your details to be updated.
Update and more numbers to watch out for
Do you have number that you’d like to warn people of? Leave me a comment and I’ll update the post.

Spoofing the number
A couple of people have been leaving comments say this in fact is Vodafone. So I think the scammers are spoofing/masking their number with a Vodafone number. Don’t be foolish to think this isn’t possible!
Update – August
Thank you to everyone who has been leaving comments.
Looking my web stats and it appears these scammers don’t work weekends and over hundred people view this page everyday during the week. So I wonder how many people are getting called?
January 2008 Update
Thank you everyone for leaving a comment once again
Reading other blog posts and comments left here some people are convince this is not a scam, I think maybe in some cases it isn’t, but I’m sure you’ll agree scammers or a marketing company hired from Vodafone, we don’t want to be bugged and if you do ring us at least know our name!
What do companies expect our response will be in this day and age when all we here is about ID theft?

I emailed Vodafone customer services yesterday to ask about the 08080000144 number after reading through this blog. They replied saying that it was a courtesy call from them & if I did not want to receive these calls to reply to that email & let them know. So, not a scam but if the calls are annoying you I would just contact customer services & ask to be removed from their list.

I can confirm 100pct that this is Vodafone, i received a call a short while ago and checked on here for information. After reading most of the replies the phone range again and said he was from vodafone and he knew i was not the account holder as the contract is in my daughters name, he called me by my first name and asked for the name on the contract and my password. I had just written to them cancelling the contract and he offered me a deal i could not refuse, so tomorrow i will be recieving two new phones and nearly half what i was paying before along with more anytime minutes than i had before.

As from my previous post i do work for LBM. Due to websites and rumours of the number being a scam we the way go through DPA has changed. We now can for you by full name and immediatley mention the cals recorded. After this we have to ask for you password. Or 2 from these:
- First line of address or postcode
- Date Of Birth
- The tarrif or extra’s you have.
So if you give out the first line of address and tarrif and ask the agent to confirm you date of birth you know u have not give too much away and put yourself at ease.

Matthew Giblin does not work for Vodafone. This is not a Vodafone number. I would know. Vodafone would not charge you to call on an 0808 number. If you have any doubt ask for the callers name and ring 191 for free.

I have had multiple calls from this number 08080000144. They are not from vodafone but are from an affiliate…another company. They all sound Asian, i think they have bought a list of all customers from vodafoe who are coming to the end of their contracts and then try to sell you a mbile contract through them but a vodafone contract. They are NOT vodafone though. I called Vodafone to complain and the jokers tried to offer me a new contract instead of dealing with my complaint. I WILL NOT BE RENEWING MY CONTRACT with Vodafone!!
If you need to complain go to http://www.ofcom.org.uk/
and also http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/
If thi is the way Vodafone treats its customers selling their details to third parties then I say cancel your contract and change provider. I will!

I called up Vodafone customer services and said I had a call from 0808 0000 133 as I had given them my address and PIN (i know.. I’m an idiot), and I was worried.
In the end it IS vodafone and not a scammer. The 0808 number is a team of people calling the numbers whose contracts are coming up for renewal, so it’s not dodgy, but just an aggressive sales team. Their systems don’t sync with the normal customer services either which is why their calls won’t be on your notes when you call up the 191 number.
Hope this helps.

I’ve been getting calls of thr 144 number for a few days now, all of which I have missed. One way to get rid of them is to say you’re not the contract owner and you’re under 18. Then they can’t try to sell you/make you upgrade anything.

My ex worked for a company called LBM – they’re based in Middleton, Manchester. They cold call mobile customers claiming to be from Vodafone/Orange etc… and then get a load of abuse back off most people
If you get called by one of these numbers, please do give them hell…

The thing I don’t get is that I’m with O2 in the middle of my contract – unless they are going to give me a BB Storm with the email access for no more than I am paying for my iPhone then I will switch – as it will be snowing in hell before that happens i’ll stick with o2

I’ve been receiving these calls for 2 weeks now, I never answer because the number just looked dodgy, plus if it’s something important, they’ll leave a message.
I’m with O2 so I have no idea what “Vodafone” would want with me!

I have just had someone trying to call me from this number which as i dont recognise it, I ignored however, from what I have read, it seems that this is purely a vodafone number, strange considering the phone in question is on Tesco Mobile which piggybacks on the O2 network so beware guys, its not just vodafone they are ringing

Really there is not a big huge great conspiracy behind it. There is no need to speculate, there is no need to come up with sci-fi scenarios.
08080000144 IS a legit Vodafone number. ANY person with half a brain would call Vodafone on a verified number (pick up your Vodafone handset and hit 191) (you can also reach 191 through a normal phone on a number that ends 191 – cant recall it now) AND ASK THEM. They will confirm it.
Why on earth you have to speculate and come up with wild far fetched stories on things that can be safely verified in SECONDS?
When i activated a new Vodafone contract that number called me to make sure everything is ok. They didnt ask for personal info. They had my name with their first sentence.
“Hi, is that Mr MyName?” “Speaking”. “We’re calling from Vodafone to make sure everything is fine with your new contract”
“everything is fine, thanks”
“thank you sir, good day” END
When i came close to the end of the contract the same number called offering a new deal. I accepted. Got confirmation in the post.
When i decided to leave Vodafone the number called again to offer a deal. I declined. I sent over my notice and terminated my contract. End of.
Now that we established that the number actually belongs to Vodafone we have to examine if scammers can potentially spoof their number to this. The answer is YES. if you feel uncomfortable talking to them ask their name, their department, pick up your handset, dial 191 to customer services and ask to be forwarded.
If you feel even more uncomfortable tell them you cant speak to them now for whatever reason and ask them to email you. DONT give them your email address. If its on your account record they should have it.
If you feel even MORE uncomfortable about it dont talk to any of them and just deal directly with the Vodafone admins on the Vodafone forums. They will STILL ask for personal info in order to access your account.
If you want to be paranoid email them and tell them you lost your vocal cords and you want all correspondence in writing.
After that if you dont trust the letters coming through your letterbox originating from Vodafone tell them you’ll hand collect your billing from their headquarters directly.
Jokes aside is really hard to understand why on earth adult individuals would go to such great lengths to make up speculated wild fantasy scenarios when the whole shabang could be verified in seconds ffs.
Chill, really, relax. It’s not the end of the world. It’s just annoying marketing. If you’re running a smartphone there should be a whitelist/blacklist application for your handset. Give a couple quid and buy it then blacklist the number. For your sanity.. and ours.

I received a call from 133 number today and was wary initially…he asked me for the first 2 digits of my pin number and then told ME the last 2 digits. He then told me my DOB and Address (didn’t ask for them)… I was still dubious but he proceeded to explain why he was calling (contract coming up for renewal). He told me exactly how many minutes me and my hubby were using (we have 2 phones on the contract) and how much we have been paying each month for our bills. He offered a different tariff, phone upgrades etc etc. I didn’t go ahead…don’t like being put on the spot, so told him to ring me back. As I work in a town centre I nipped out to my vodafone shop and checked with them if this was a vodafone caller… he said he didn’t know what numbers would call but did say they outsource alot. He checked my records and showed me that my record did indeed show that I had been contacted today by their renewals dept, so that would seem to have genuinly been vodafone calling me. I still won’t renew over the phone and will be doing it instore so I can see exactly what I am agreeing to before signing anything!!!

I keep getting calls from the 144 number, and I refuse to answer. I figure if they call me between 9 and 4 then they clearly know nothing about me because I’m a student.
I’m not even on Vodafone though! I’m with T-Mobile until this weekend when I switch to O2, so if they pretend to be Vodafone it won’t really work, will it?
Shocked!
December 15, 2009
Hi, Jamie.
Been posting my own story about this company on a few sites after googling the number.
After a bit of research I found out that the company calling us is LBM Marketing… I was shocked! Here’s why:
Wow, these guys are ridiculous.
I recently posted my CV on a popular job search site and LBM (the cold callers who call from the above number) immediately responded, offering me an interview. They must have only quickly looked at my CV and not given it much thought, because the offer came within a couple of hours of me posting my CV… Suspicious? I thought so too. So I decided to do some research into the company and found online that they are cold callers and it was a commission based job with a VERY bad wage. I obviously politely declined the interview.
Here’s the kicker, since declining the interview they have obviously added me to their spam list and I have just received a ’sales call’ from some woman about Vodafone. I was sat at my desk at my new job, so immediately hung up when I realised it wasn’t important. I then googled the number and found this page and realised it was the same company who wanted me in for an interview.
I think it’s fucking disgraceful that they’re using applicant’s personal details to try and boost their sales. I’m tempted to stop at their office on the way home.
Any thoughts?
