My little rant about the potential closing down of BBC 6music

In a wideranging strategic review, he will announce the closure of the digital radio stations 6 Music and Asian Network and introduce a cap on spending on broadcast rights for sports events of 8.5 per cent of the licence fee, or about £300 million.

http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/media/article7041944.ece

When I was younger (okay young) my favourite Radio station was Radio One by far. Chris Evans, Mark & Lard, Simon Mayo, Steve Lamacq era also the dance DJs that I still enjoy today. As you get older you just can’t stand the bits of crappy pop music and the general crappy talk between songs. Never mention the water down news or Chris Moyles talking about Big Brother.

Lauren Laverne, a presenter for 6 Music, wrote on website Twitter: “Looks like I’m joining that Facebook group then. Boo, boo and thrice boo.” BBC presenter Charlie Brooker said: “I was going to buy a digital radio next week. If they get rid of BBC 6 Music I might as well not bother.”

http://www.walesonline.co.uk/showbiz-and-lifestyle/showbiz/2010/02/27/flat-response-to-bbc-plans-to-axe-music-radio-station-91466-25924629/

Then you realised, that actually the music your Mum and Dad listened too wasn’t that bad. So Radio Two would seem a natural choice to move onto, nope its too golden oldies without any bottle and the odd bit of Elbow thrown in.

6 Music is perfect choice for those who want bit of main stream new music from big artists, completely new music from new bands/artists, DJs who actually know about music and some decent old stuff with bottle.

If anything, BBC 6 Music hasn’t been promoted enough – its wonders largely spread by word-of-mouth. If only it was supported rather than sidelined, and if niche audiences were celebrated as a vital part of the public service remit, rather than canned, it would become known far wider for being the station it is – the Radio 3 for the pop and rock generation, thorough but tender, wide-ranging but warm, and a bright light for all music.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/theguardian/2010/feb/27/bbc-to-cancel-6-music

I though this was an interesting visual from the Economist on presidency country visits in the first year of office.

WHEN Barack Obama was campaigning for the presidency he promised to seek “a new era of international co-operation”. In his first year in office he has changed the tone of American foreign policy and helped to shift foreigners’ perception of America. Perhaps it is no surprise that he has spent much more time overseas than his predecessors. Mr Obama has been abroad twice as long as George Bush junior managed in his first 12 months as president. Mr Obama is the first president since Jimmy Carter to travel to the Middle East in his first year and the only one whose first-year foreign forays have taken him to Africa. Franklin Roosevelt made it to Canada in his first year, but only for a holiday.
